About Mrs. Foluke Akintola

My journey into the world of respiratory therapy began with a simple desire to make a difference in the lives of others. From a young age, I felt a deep empathy for those struggling with health challenges, particularly respiratory issues. This ignited within me a passion to pursue a career dedicated to respiratory care.
After completing my education at Boston State College and the University of Massachusetts, I embarked on the challenging yet rewarding path of becoming a respiratory therapist. Every step of the way, I was driven by a determination to specialize in respiratory care. I immersed myself in coursework, practical training, and clinical experiences, honing my skills and knowledge in this specialized field. Through perseverance and dedication, I earned my credentials as a respiratory therapist.
As Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education at the University of District of Columbia, I had the unique opportunity to transform and enhance the respiratory program. One of my proudest contributions was the outstanding improvement in the scholastic achievement of students through consistently higher passing scores under my leadership as well as graduates who were performing with high clinical confidence. Furthermore, I was recognized as the 2018 Best Respiratory Therapist of the Year in the state of Maryland. I am a member of professional organizations like the Association of Asthma Educators, the American Association for Respiratory Care, and the Maryland/District of Columbia Society for Respiratory Care. Currently, I am the Respiratory Manager of the satellite Emergency Department at United Medical Center at Children’s National.
I strive to empower patients and their families with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their respiratory health effectively. Whether comforting a frightened child struggling to catch their breath or offering support to a family grappling with the diagnosis of a loved one’s respiratory illness, empathy and understanding are essential qualities for respiratory care. What I find most rewarding is mentoring children of immigrant families from Nigeria to adapt to the United States and helping them navigate different aspects of the system especially as relates to education. I love to encourage younger generations to do their best and focus on accomplishing their goals. I love going on medical missions – I’ve been involved in medical missions in Ghana and Nigeria, among others.
My journey as a respiratory therapist is a lifelong commitment to healing, compassion, and advocacy. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth, yet through it all, my passion for respiratory care remains unwavering. As I continue on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of serving others and inspired by the countless lives that have touched mine along the way.
